Mediterranean Road Trip Dinner
I've had the opportunity to work on a series of pieces advertising Penn State Food Services' themed dinners. This time around the theme was “Mediterranean Road Trip.” My goal was to combine the feel of vintage travel posters with a contemporary look that would appeal to our targeted audience: undergraduate college students.
Bryce Jordan Center Concourse Banners
I designed and illustrated over 30 two-sided banners that hang in the main concourse at Penn State's 15,000 seat arena, the Bryce Jordan Center. (That's over 60 different designs, friends.) The banners are nice and big–16 feet tall at their highest point and 8 feet wide if I am remembering correctly. There are 3 primary color schemes, 1 for each type of entertainment the BJC offers: sports, music, and family.
Fresco y Caliente
Penn State‘s South Food District opened a Mexican themed line called Fresco y Caliente (“Fresh and Hot”) in the fall of 2008. We thought it would be fun for me to illustrate an iguana as part of the new identity. The employees have had fun with him, even having an in-house naming contest. “Iggy” now welcomes you (as he hoists a barrel of gunpowder over his shoulder) to the new location, and he shows up in different poses in ads and marketing materials.
Bryce Jordan Center,
10th Anniversary
2006 marked the 10th Anniversary for Penn State's 15,000 seat arena, the Bryce Jordan Center. I had the opportunity to design a special ”Anniversary Edition” package that included a logo, billboard, ads, and ticket. Our client wanted to play up the Roman numeral X–signifying the ten years, of course–so we spun off that by poking a little bit of fun at some celebrity ex's in our ads that ran in both Pollstar and Billboard Magazines.
Logos
The Marketing group I'm a part of at Penn State services a wide range of departments includes housing & food services, inns and hotels, the campus arena, the local airport, and more. As such, there are many opportunities for our design group to design logos and establish brands. Here are some of my favorites that I've created for Penn State, as well as a few others for other clients.
Posters
I love to design posters–and the bigger the better. Here are many that I've done over the past few years, with topics ranging from basketball to groundhogs to chicken sandwiches.
Illustration
Illustration is what got me interested in design in the first place, and it is a skill that I want to improve in and implement more and more into my design. I recently read a quote that sums up my feelings: “if you have a really strong graphic design background, you have so much more freedom as an illustrator.”
